Why drywall cannot be rushed
Joint compound shrinks as it dries. Each coat must dry before the next goes on, or the finish cracks and the seams photograph through the paint. Three coats, drying between each — that is physics, and no crew can negotiate with it. Anyone promising a full room hung, finished, and painted in two days is skipping drying time.
Typical timelines
- Small patch: two short visits, usually a day or two apart.
- Single room, hang and finish: three to five working days.
- Basement: one to two weeks depending on size and soffits.
- Whole house: two to four weeks depending on size and crew.
- Popcorn ceiling removal, per room: two to three days.
- Texture-only job: one to two days per average room.
What slows jobs down
Humidity (mud dries slower), cold (same), extensive repairs to existing work, painted popcorn that will not scrape, and change orders mid-job. We build realistic buffers into our schedules rather than promising the moon.
How to plan around it
Dust protection goes up first; you can usually live in the house during the work. Plan painting after our final sanding — and give the last coat a day before paint goes on. See painting new drywall.
