Prime. No, really — prime.

Fresh drywall mud is thirsty. Paint applied directly to unprimed mud soaks in unevenly — the joints photograph through as dull bands, a flaw painters call "flashing." A proper drywall primer (PVA primer) seals the surface so the topcoat goes on even. Skipping primer is the single most common way to ruin a good drywall job.

Timing

Give the final sanding a day before priming — the last coat should be fully dry. Then prime, then two topcoats. Rushing paint onto damp mud traps moisture and can bubble.

Choosing paint

Do we paint?

No — we are a drywall-only crew. We leave walls sanded, textured, and ready; we can recommend painters we trust in Charles County.

The flashing test

After priming, look at the wall in angled light. If you see dull bands where the joints are, the primer did not fully seal — another primer coat on those areas before topcoat saves the job.

Questions homeowners ask us

Do I need to prime new drywall before painting?

Yes — non-negotiable. Unprimed mud absorbs paint unevenly and the joints show through ("flashing"). Use a PVA drywall primer.

How long should I wait to paint new drywall?

Give the final coat a day to dry fully, then prime. Painting over damp mud can bubble and trap moisture.

What paint finish is best for new drywall?

Flat or matte for most walls — most forgiving. Reserve semi-gloss for trim and areas with excellent (Level 5) finishing.
