The definition

Skim coating is a thin layer of joint compound (or plaster) troweled over an entire wall or ceiling surface — not just the seams. It levels everything: old texture, minor damage, bad previous finishing, all buried under one continuous smooth skin.

When skim coating is the answer

When it is not

Skim coating will not fix structural problems, will not stick to wet or crumbling surfaces, and is overkill for a single patched hole. It is a resurfacing technique, not a repair technique.

What it involves

Two to three thin coats, troweled on and sanded between, over the whole surface. It is skilled, physical work — and it is transformative. A skim-coated room looks like new construction.

Questions homeowners ask us

How much does skim coating cost?

It is priced per square foot of surface and runs more than standard finishing — it is two to three full coats over everything. The free visit gives you the real number.
A note on prices: material and labor costs move up and down, and no two jobs need the same work. Treat any numbers here as starting points, not quotes.

Can skim coating fix textured walls?

Yes — that is one of its main uses. Heavy texture gets buried under the skim coats and the wall comes out smooth.

Is skim coating DIY-friendly?

Honestly, no. Troweling a thin, even coat over a whole wall is one of the harder drywall skills. This is hire-it-out work.
