What DIYers get right

Hanging the boards is genuinely DIY-able. Measure, cut, screw to studs — a careful homeowner with a helper can hang a room over a weekend. Small patches are also very doable with a patch kit and patience.

Where DIY jobs show

The finishing. Almost every DIY drywall job we get called to fix has the same story: the hanging was fine, and the taping and mudding was not. Visible seams, crooked corners, sanded-through tape, texture that does not match. Finishing is a feel craft — it takes hundreds of hours to develop, and it is the entire visible result.

The honest cost math

DIY saves the labor, which is most of the cost — drywall materials are cheap. But factor in: taping knives, mud pans, sanding gear, dust control, texture sprayer rental, and your weekends. And the risk cost: if the finish shows, paying a pro to skim and refinish over your work costs more than hiring them for the finishing in the first place.

The smart hybrid

Hang it yourself, hire the finishing. This is common, smart, and something we do regularly — see taping and finishing. You save real money where your labor actually helps, and the visible part gets professional hands.

Questions homeowners ask us

Is hanging drywall hard?

Not very — measuring, cutting, and screwing boards is straightforward DIY work. The finishing is the hard part.

Can I mud and tape drywall myself?

You can, but this is where DIY results show. If you try it, practice in a closet first. Or hire the finishing — the hybrid approach.

What tools do I need for DIY drywall?

Taping knives (6", 10", 12"), mud pan, utility knife, drywall saw, screw gun, sanding gear, and dust protection. Texture needs a sprayer.

What happens after you reach out
